On their biggest tour to date, Laszewo electrified the House of Blues main room on a chilly Friday night. The electronic trio — comprising Kiki, Justin, and Matt — brought their vibrant energy to the stage, captivating a crowd eager for a night of unique sounds.
Heading into the House of Blues, I had no idea what the night would hold. Spirit Motel, a solo electronic artist, opened the show with a dreamlike, rhythm-infused atmosphere, blending hypnotic beats and transcendent melodies to create an intimate yet dynamic vibe. He describes his music as “a temporary home for the soul,” a nod to the “motel” in his name. Kicking off his set, he danced along to his tracks, his passion and deep connection to the music unmistakable. The rhythmic, buzzing bass sent vibrations through my body, keeping me physically in sync with the music, while his delicate vocals enhanced and carried each track. As his set progressed, more people trickled in, filling the room and dancing along to his infectious beats. Spirit Motel’s music set the perfect tone for the evening, uniting the crowd as they moved in unison. To wrap up his set, he ventured into the crowd for a photo op, a personal touch that endeared him to the audience.
Before the show, I had the chance to chat with Justin, the San Diego native of Laszewo, who shared some insight into the band and their sound. He expressed his excitement about returning to the venue where he had attended his first concert. “15 years ago, I was in the crowd at my first concert here. The fact that we can come back and perform is insane — it’s surreal.” When asked about the inspiration for their new album, he explained, “We’re so wide-ranged, we have such different tastes so we bring all that together. There’s country, electronic, hip-hop, and indie. We wanted to bring a bunch of genres together and have a song for everything, In Colors for every color”. This eclectic mix was reflected in their set, which appealed to a diverse crowd, even myself, despite not being a typical EDM listener.
The group’s entrance was nothing short of dramatic. Their signature logo flashed brightly across the stage, revealing an elaborate DJ booth, while rolling rainbow lights set the tone for an unforgettable night. Kiki, the trio’s frontwoman, illuminated the stage from the moment she stepped on, her shiny outfit and radiant presence adding to the electric atmosphere. Her infectious energy immediately drew the crowd in. The energy in the venue was palpable, with the crowd jumping and dancing along in unison. For much of the set, I found myself struggling to say more than “I love the energy here” and “I’m so happy!” — the excitement was contagious.
Their set effortlessly glided through a mix of covers, tracks from their previous albums, and selections from their latest touring album, keeping the crowd engaged and eager to see what would come next. One of my favorite moments was during the performance of “Break a Sweat,” where I, too, broke a sweat dancing along. The hypnotic beats drew me in, sending the crowd into a musical trance. A standout moment was their distinctive cover of Florence + The Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over,” which transitioned into Calvin Harris’s iconic “Feel So Close,” with the entire audience singing along to every word.
As the adrenaline of the show lingered during my walk back to the car, I reflected on my newfound appreciation for EDM. While dance music may not be for everyone, Laszewo continues to challenge that notion, effortlessly drawing in listeners from all genres. What I took away from the experience is that I do, in fact, enjoy EDM — and I can’t wait for the next Laszewo show I plan to attend.
